About the Artist

Rebecca E. Hammer was born in 1984 and has harbored a passion for visual communication since she received her first art supplies at age 5. She decided on a career in art at the age of 13 and began taking classes at the Hite Art Institute in 2003.

During her career as a student at the University of Louisville, she participated in group shows at The Cinderblock Gallery and the Center for Fine Art Photography in Colorado, as well as a solo exhibition in connection with her undergraduate honors thesis topic, “The Ethics of Digital Photo Manipulation”, which helped her earn the Winthrop Allen Memorial Prize.

After graduating summa cum laude with a BFA in both Photography and Communication Arts, she focused for several years on a career in graphic design and web development. However, this transition out of academia led to a brief but intense period of artistic block. By building her own darkroom and participating in a Directed Study with other artists through the University of Louisville, she has overcome this struggle and is now striving to establish herself as an emerging artist in her home state of Kentucky.

She is currently experimenting with alternative process photography while keeping environmentally friendly practices in mind.
